Hailfairy is giving away 2 Three Day Camping Tickets to Oxegen 2010 with thanks to Vodafone Ireland.
All you have to do to win is to Simply upload and tag the most embarrassing festival photo of yourself or a mate to our new Facebook fan page, and get as many people as possible to ‘like’ it!
This competition must end on June 30th so get tagging!
So we’re nearing that time of the year again! Nice few weeks of sunshine and entry into festival season. This year sees Vodafone sponsoring Oxegen’s second stage with auld favourites The Prodigy headlining on Sunday, Black Eyed Peas for all those screaming 16 year olds and Fatboy Slim for all who want to re-live Norman Cook’s 90’s hits.
This is about the 6th time The Prodigy have returned to Witnoxegen and it’s always worth checking out Maxim, Keith and Liam tear the stage and crowd apart with a blend of old and new cult classics from albums as early as ‘Experience’. Check out one of their live version of Their Law below. Nuts!:
Another act not to be missed for a bop on the Vodafone stage is Andy Cato and Tom Findley aka Groove Armada. The London boys will be no doubt be banging out their most recent ‘Superstylin’ acapella as the video below from Big Day Out 2010 down under shows y’all.
Our final recommendation is simply for atmosphere. If the hype around Florence and her red-haired Machine is anything to go by from last year’s Oxegen and EP, the crowd’s reaction to The Temper Trap’s hypnotic single ‘Sweet Disposition’ will no doubt blow the lid off the Vodafone stage on Sunday evening.
Finally, based on our ongoing coverage of Irish electronic music and Oxegen in particular over the last few years, we’re going to put ourselves into the running to give away some Oxegen tickets courtesy of Vodafone. Fellow bloggers, get into the mix too at http://www.facebook.com/vodafoneireland

We always loved a Busy P interview, still one of if not the coolest guy in music, although Sven would run him close! The amazing Red Bull academy recently did a 2 Hour! video with the former Dafty Punk manager! If your not aware of theRed Bull Academy website and you have a day to scratch your arse, well there’s a whole days worth of amazing interviews worth checking out.
Well now you know! We absolutely love their new Remix of LOTP’s “Best in the Class”. Erol played it recently on BBC6, top top top tune! They’re still the best remixers in the business! One of us, possibly both of us, are heading over to Barcelona for Sonar this June. The Dewaele’s are playing, they got us pretty excited at EP will they do it again? Can they still deliver?!
We’re one step closer to the release of ‘Tron The Legacy’, the sequel to 1982’s ‘Tron’, one of the most venerated Sci-fi movies of all time. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring newly Oscar-ified Jeff Bridges (who reprises his 1982 role as Jeff Flynn), the movie is about artificial intelligence and gaming. While it’s 3D, its not like Avatar. According to Kosinski “Ours is sort of a “Wizard of Oz” approach. Ninety-eight percent of the 3-D is in the world of “Tron.” The 3-D really starts once we get into the Tron world. We used a newer generation of camera than the one used on “Avatar.” They built it specifically for us”.
So will there be a yellow brick road? We hope not. Will there be some new Daft Punk tracks? We hope so. Apparently Kosinski is a huge electronic music fan and met up with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo 2 years ago to talk about a collaboration on the movie. The French duo have now been working on the soundtrack for over a year and a half, quite unique when you think that they were coming up with tracks before filming even began.
When asked about Daft Punk’s interest in Tron he says “ these guys take “Tron” very seriously. Obviously, “Tron” was a huge influence on them. It was almost like they were interviewing me to make sure that I was going to hold up to the “Tron” legacy. Clearly a huge influence, you only have to see the iconic helmets, the triangular sci-fi style concert stage design and even parts of the “Around the World” vid to see that these two are major Tron fans. So no doubt this is going to be a movie and soundtrack match made in electro scifi heaven.
So all sounds pretty cool really. Jeff Bridges – check. 3D-ness – check. Sci-fi end of the world stuff – check. Daft Punk – check. You only have to wait until late 2010 to see it. In the meantime feast your eyes on the trailer – only released today.
Following the double A side single ‘Waves’ / ‘ Death Suite’ on BoysNoize Records, Erol Alkan and Boys Noize have announced the next double header single ‘Avalanche’ / ‘Lemonade’. The names are flipped around this time as this single is being released by Erol’s label, and you can listen to previews on Erol’s Myspace and Facebook, as well as Boys Noize’s Myspace and Facebook
The previews are short and sweet but sound pretty damn good and certainly whet the appetite. ‘Lemonade’ bangs it out and will no doubt will be a big hit on the Spring/Summer festival circuit. Release date still to be confirmed, but apparently it’s soon so watch this space.
If you find yourself in them parts - Erol and Boys Noize will be performing together for a special dj set at Miami’s Ultra Festival on March 27th. Or if you’re one of the many thats jetted off down unda in search for sunnier climes and times, catch Boys Noize in Sydney’s Forum on March 20th. Guaranteed to be a good one as he smashed it at Sydney’s Future Music Festival last weekend. Opening with ‘Kontact Me’ and blowing The Prodigy, who were playing at the same time, completely out of the water. Boys Noize loves Sydney and it shows!
If you’re a fan of Erol on BBC6, get involved in a petition to save the station. The BBC have announced they will be closing the digital station. The station is recognised as one of the few remaining outlets for independent music across the music spectrum, and it’s closure will be seen as a blow for music lovers across the world. The 6Mix, which is hosted by Erol, as well as the likes of Soulwax and Andrew Weatherall has been a great success for the station and alternative dance music fans alike.Check out their SaveBB6 page on Facebook, where you can sign the online petition or tweet to your hearts content #saveBBC6music
Hailfairy has been quiet for a couple of months, so no better time than coming out of the doldrums to introduce an up and coming artist, Delphic. Delphic is an electronic indie three piece group from Manchester known for mixing euphoric electronica with anthemic songs for a post-dance world. The group is consists of vocalists, guitarists, drummers and the compulsory synth operator, which is becoming the norm for this emerging genre with the likes of The XX and Casio Kids. The boys can also remix as their revision of Phoenix – Fences below. Their debut album Acolyte was released last month and is definitely worth a listen. Check out their video single Halcyon below and look out for these guys doing the festival rounds in 2010:
Studio !K7 have produced the goods again by adding Chromeo to their long list of artists on their DJ-Kicks albums. The Montreal duo had some big shoes to fill with this album following previous DJ-Kicks albums from the likes of Erlend Oye, Tiga and Hot Chip to name a few. This latest version fails to disappoint with some classic blends of jazz, synth and funk will keep you bopping for hours on end.
The album features some old skool electronic sounds from back in the 80’s such as the opener Kano - Ikeya Seki which has been recently sampled by Ed Banger’s Kavinsky for his song Grand Canyon. Check the slick microsite for the album at chromeo-djkicks.com which includes the full tracklist and a 15 minute album preview.
Ok we’re absolutely blown away by this! One of us had been questioning the man recently on whether he still got it, and the answer is a definitive YES!
There is just so much energy in this set and it’s hard to imagine that the whole set was done on vinyl. This Essential Mix features Ridha’s favourite tracks for the last 10 years!
Berlin’s Boys Noize aka Alex Ridha takes to the turntables for two hours of supercharged house & techno!

Ok so we know that Thomas and Guy are have scored the OST for Disneys remake of ‘Tron’ which seems like forever away from a release (December 2010). But what we didn’t know was that they’d be making a cameo in the movie! We know all this thanks to 25 year old airhead Olivia Wilde whos stars in the remake and she let it slip in a recent interview with MTV. Readhere
“They were in the movie,“star Olivia Wilde let slip during an interview with Josh Horowitz.
The 25-year-old “House” actress didn’t go into detail about what Daft Punk’s role will be, nor how long they will be on screen for, but she did say Disney is looking to feature the band in future promotions. “There’s some ideas in the works about how to incorporate them into a Comic-Con event,” said Wilde.
When it came to talk about the film itself, though, Wilde had to keep her lips sealed, both as a result of a keep-everything-under-wraps policy and because she hadn’t yet seen any finished, CG-enhanced footage. While she wouldn’t confirm that her character boards one of the iconic lightcycles in the film, Wilde did say she gets to toss around one of the famous glowing discs. “I do use the disc,” she said. “But I don’t play with it in the same way as the other characters. I have my own way to use it.”
Like Wilde, we’ll all probably have to wait until next Comic-Con for an extended look at “Tron Legacy.” And what will happen when we do get that coveted glimpse? “San Diego might explode!” she predicted.“
Also Daft Punk may be making an appearance at Comic Con – the annual fan convention which is playing an increasingly important role in making-or-breaking movies/games in the sci-fi world – to support their involvement in the upcoming Tron
Here’s also a fake edit of what was thought to be Daft Punks ‘Tron Legacy Theme’. We’ve now found out that its a Cryda Luv Rework, its short but it does whet the appetite and it’s on repeat with us!
Were so excited to hear this after the amazingness that was “Sound of Silver”, still can’t believe they’ve recorded new material after the rumours about them finishing last year. We’re gonna get our ears on this soon!
Bye Bye Bayou’ is the first new music from LCD Soundsystem since the release of ‘Sound of Silver,’ and it is a stunning re-introduction of the band to the world. The track is a cover of an Alan Vega (Suicide) song from his 1981 debut album.
“Bye Bye Bayou” is 8+ minutes of classic LCD Soundsystem, deep soulful grooves that will appeal to fans and non-fans alike and will whet the appetite for fans dying for LCD’s upcoming third album to be released in March 2010.
The single will receive a Nov. 24 worldwide commercial release through standard digital channels.
“Bye Bye Bayou” will NOT appear on the third LCD SOUNDSYSTEM album, which is currently being recorded and expected out sometime in the early months of 2010.
Hailfairy came across LA based Classixx aka Michael David and Tyler Blake on a recent Aeroplane June Mixtape which featured two of their more recent tracks ‘I’ll Get You’ and their remix of one of Phoenix’s new tracks ‘Lisztomania’. Due to copyright infringement from a Boys Choir with the same name, the boys have changed their name from a shocking ‘Young Americans’ and are finally making a name for themselves stateside for their own blend of funky and jazzy electronic beats. Recently they’ve featured on a Kitsune Tape and they’re also doing some support gigs with Justice in LA this October.
This milder blend of synth and jazz based electro has become more popular of late and as much as we love the banging stuff, it’s nice to chill out to these beats ever so often. Check out the two Classixx tracks below as well as Aeroplane’s most recent Soundcloud offering.
How many tracks have you heard in the last couple of years with those “White Noise” blasts, or a song that just builds and builds? Well we’ve heard lots and Dubfire is the man thats been credited with starting it all (the White Noise that is). Resident Advisor, even ran an article on him last month discussing this. Hundreds of artists have since copied this technique. Its all thanks to “Emissions” and its hard to believe was released way back in 2007!
Another track that inspired others like it with its “Slow Rise”, and endless building and building is Christian Smith & John Selways “Total Departure”. Its another 2007 release on Adam Beyers Drumcode Label, and as John Selway himself says
“We originally created the track as both a simple and effective DJ tool and for elements we could use in our live sets. We never expected how it would blow up the way it did, we were really surprised!“
Be sure to check out the Cirez D remix of “Total Departure” as it to is a monster, and even more techno orientated. It had huge support from the likes of Ivan Smagghe when it was originally reased. Massive!
And here’s a track that fuses both the “White Noise” and “Slow Rise” to perfection… We remember first hearing this when Sven played Tripod April 2008. It blew us away, we got a crappy recording of it on one of our phones and after several days trying to Track ID it, we found out it was coming out on Svens “Cocoon Compilation H” , happy days. And of course Dubfire had a hand in the production of this too!
We’re not sure what to make of this, it stinks of that GAP commercial they did years ago to be honest! It’s also a trailer for a pretty lame looking game! Anyway we thought you should know about it, tell us what you think yourselves. What a shit song to mix into, although probably not their choice.
Here are some of their other mixes to be expected in the game:
Daft Punk mixes featured in DJ Hero:
“Around the World” vs. Young MC’s “Bust a Move”
“Da Funk” vs. N.A.S.A.’s “Strange Enough” [ft. Karen O, ODB, and Fatlip]
“Da Funk” vs. Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”
“Robot Rock” vs. Hashim’s “Al-Naafiysh (The Soul)”
“Robot Rock” vs. Queen’s “We Will Rock You”
“Short Circuit” vs. Boogie Down Productions’ “Jack of Spades”
“Technologic” vs. Gary Numan’s “Cars”
“Television Rules The Nation” vs. No Doubt’s “Hella Good”
We’re more excited about the trickles of info we’ve been hearing about Disney’s new film Tron. Apparently the producer of Tron got a call from the French duo who wanted to meet up and talk. They had a meeting in a cafe in LA where he was sold on their ideas for the movie. He’s since said that the cues he’s heard so far are sounding incredible, and that they have been holed up in a studio in LA working on it. They were also playing a longer version of that one theme everyone has heard. Which we are absolutely dying to get an Mp3 of!
Anyway here’s a nice and surprisingly good remix of that snippet everyones excited about.
Day 3 and always the comedown day for us. After the excitement of the first few days we always find the Sunday to be anti-climatic, the general poorer line ups for the Sundays haven’t helped too. But this is year is looking like one of the best closing Sundays the Picnic’s had yet. I think last year was Primal Scream and year before was Sex Pistols headlining, which we happily passed on. This year its Flaming Lips or Basement Jaxx, way better choice! For 2 years straight it was over to the bodytonic tent for Laurent Garnier, great in 2005, not so good in 2006. Last year we had Deadmau5 before the heavy rains hit on Sunday night, who was ok. Thought the sound was far too low in that tent, we really hope they improve it for this year! A Bacardi tent highlight in 2007 was definitely Dj Mehdi at 6pm, anyone catch him that day, great craic!
So on to our choices for Day 3, at this stage many people could be at their whits end covered in mud, which is looking like it could be a possibility, but we haven’t given up hope yet. Come on sun where the fook are you!
SUNDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Again there is gonna be some more tough choices to make this year, with Royksopp and Flaming Lips finishing off in the Electric Arena or over to Zombie Nation and Erol Alkan in The Little Big Tent. There’s probably gonna be a lot of running back and forth between each tent we thinks (thank god they’re both beside each other!!) It’ll be the battle of the tents!
Electric Arena vs Little Big Tent!!??
Erol Alkan 10pm to 12:00 close @ Little Big Tent.
This’ll be Erol’s first visit to the Picnic… about time! Lets all give him a warm welcome, not that he won’t get it!. The guys a personal hero of ours, has always been right up there and still has one of if not the best taste in banging electro, and maybe only 2many dj’s can match him when on his day. We’ve seen him nearly a dozen times now from the college days @ the Trinity ball, and UCD bar, to the old TBMC and most recently at Andrews Lane Theatre, each time as memorable as the last. The chap never disappoints, and in one of his most recent sets he even opened with the intro of Oasis’ Rock n Roll star straight into his remix of Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Zero”. We can’t wait to see what he has planned for us. It’ll be something good either way. 2hrs… yes please!
Zombie Nation 8:30pm – 10-00 (Before Erol) @ Little Big Tent
Zombie Nation is a german techno and electro project of the Munich based DJ and producer Florian Senfter also known as “John Starlight”. Many probably know Zombie Nation for his now infamous track “Kernkraft 400″ which got released in 1999 and is now synonymous with any NBA, NFL or American hockey match you might attend or see on TV. Here are a couple of tracks favoured by us, “Paeng Paeng” actually got signed to Sven Vaths Cocoon label.
Simian Mobile Disco 4.15 – 5.30pm @ Electric Arena
If you want to leave the campsite early on Sunday and you’ve got itchy feet, then be sure not to miss Simian Mobile Disco @ 4.15pm in the Electric Arena. We’ve absolutely no idea why these guys are so low down the order of the day. they were third last on behind Marco carola in 2007 and were easily a festival highlight. Lets not forget their playing Live (not a Dj Set) and they’ll be bringing their own live show to go with it! Here is a vid of them playing out their collaboration with Beth Ditto “Cruel Intentions” @ this years Pukkelpop. Great Song, number one written all over it!
Straight after SMD, its Florence and the Machine, and if Oxegen is anything to go by then this is gonna be wedged. She seems to attract a massive following, and obviously strikes a chord with the indie kids. People were getting stretchered out of Oxegen after she played there! It’ll probably make the buzz during SMD pretty cool tho, before she gets onstage. After the “Florence” mania there’s Fleet Foxes who we honestly don’t know much about but have heard nothing but good things and will probably stay to catch a bit of.
Royksopp 8.15pm -10.15pm @ Electric Arena (Clash with Zombie Nation)
Röyksopp are the electronic music duo based in Bergen, Norway, and are famous for tracks from their hugely successfull first album “Melody Am”. Who doesn’t know “Poor Leno” or “Eple“.
Heres a nice bit of trivia. Did you know?: The song “Eple” was licensed by Apple for use as the welcome music to Mac OS X Panther operating system, playing the first time a user booted a new Mac!. I’d say that bagged them a tidy piny or two! Eple is the Norwegian word for Apple.
The band consists of Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge. The group formed officially in 1998 and released their debut album Melody A.M. in 2001. The Norwegian word “Røyksopp” means puffball fungus (lit. “(a) smoke mushroom”).
One of us caught them playing the ambassador here a few years ago, and they didn’t disappoint. Their usuallyone of the first bands on peoples wish list’s to see at Ep and are always strongly rumoured. Well no more rumours, they’re here and should have Karin Dreijer with them on vocal duties (Royksopp – What else is There?)
Other Must sees that shouldn’t be missed are Duke Dumont and Aeroplane who go on before Zombie Nation in the Little Big Tent.
Here is a link to a mixtape by Aeroplane!
VA – Mixmag presents : Disco Balaerica mixed by Aeroplane here
The Duke is no stranger having played the Bacardi Tent last year on Sunday getting a great response, his productions are second to none and he’s not to shabby as a DJ either, we think he’ll be better suited to a bigger tent!
Well thats all our personal recommendations, its 2 more sleeps and we can’t wait. We hope you all enjoy and be sure to visit us next week as we plan on taking loads of HD videos to put up on our own youtube channel. All going to plan that is! We’re gonna do are best, nothing better than a good vid to jog the memory.
